Title / Titel Evaluation of EEG as an objective assessment method for lower urinary tract afferents and cortical activity in healthy and OAB subjects.
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung Supraspinal centres in the cortex and brain stem are crucial for bladder perception and control during urine storage and voiding. There is however a lack of objective measurements of lower urinary tract (LUT) sensations and little is known about the changes in cortical processing of bladder sensations in healthy subjects and in patients with disturbed bladder function like overactive bladder (OAB).
Electroencephalography (EEG) is a non invasive, objective technique to assess cortical activity with a high temporal resolution, which enables the immediate detection of cortical activation pattern towards sensations from the LUT.
Our aim is to gain information about those cortical activation patterns in healthy and OAB subjects, and to investigate the potential differences between both groups. Furthermore, we want to perform EEG source localisation of the cortical responses to bladder sensations. These findings can be compared to previous imaging results like functional magnet resonance imaging.
To reach our aims, we plan to perform a single centre study with at least 12 healthy subjects, 12 patients with neurogenic overactive bladder and 12 patients with idiopathic overactive bladder. All subjects will undergo two measurement periods consisting of 4 measurements: a) baseline, b) continuous filling cystometry, c) ice water stimulation, d) endovesical electric stimulation (EVES).
EEG signals will be continuously recorded and their analysis will include the assessment of changes in frequency domains (a-c), the evaluation of event related potentials (c, d), topographical mapping of distribution of electrical potentials (a-d) and source localisation of cortical activity (a-d).
The results can provide a major contribution to the understanding of OAB and its objective differentiation from healthy conditions.
