| Summary / Zusammenfassung | After a lesion of the cervical spinal cord, functional movements of the arms and hands can be more or less severly affected. According to the majority of quadriplegic people, the improvement of upper extremity function has a priority over other impaired functions. At the present time, many different hand function evaluation tests exist. Nevertheless, they assess hand function rather subjectively. The aim of this project is to develop an instrumented glove that can evaluate objectively and accurately slight changes in fine motor skills of the hand. A new bend sensor-based glove will be developed, given that the already existing gloves do not fulfill our requirements. The goal is to develop a glove, which technical characteristics will provide a highly valid, reliable and feasible hand function assessment tool. Therefore, the new glove will be evaluated for accuracy and repeatability. The feasibility of the glove will be tested on healthy subjects and quadriplegic patients. While performing ADL tasks, the glove signals of the healthy subjects and quadriplegic patients will be recorded. The signals of the patients will be mathematically compared with those of the healthy subjects to evaluate their degree of hand function impairment as well as determine the progresses they have accomplished over time. The precision of the new hand function evaluation test will be compared to that of other tests performed in parallel. Following the feasibility evaluation, technical improvements of the glove will be taken into account. |
