| Summary / Zusammenfassung | In Switzerland, about 10000 to 12000 anterior cruciate ligament ruptures of the knee occur each year in relatively young patients with an average age of 35 years. The treatment approach to this disorder depends on several factors (e.g. time period since injury, lesions of other structures, age of the patient, etc…) and is well investigated from a medical point of view. However, there is disagreement in regard to the cost effectiveness of surgical over conservative therapy from a Public Health point of view. Estimated values for cost effectiveness ratios ranges from $5857 to CHF 667'600 per quality adjusted life year (QALY). An adequate assumption of the cost effectiveness ratio for operative versus conservative treatment of anterior cruciate ligament ruptures is lacking particularly in regard to the Swiss setting and is emergently needed to provide health care decision makers with adequate information to allow informed choices. | ||||||
