| Summary / Zusammenfassung | Present knowledge of human spinal cord neuroanatomy is primarily based on invasive anatomical and pathological research. The functional integration of the cord has been mainly inferred from invasive experimental neurophysiology employing cats and other lower mammals. High-resolution Magnetic Resonance (MR), diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), and functional MR imaging (f-MRI) have evolved into important research tools for examining the structural and functional nature of neurological pathology however, applications in the spinal cord are limited due to its fine structure and its elasticity, the requirement for high in-plane resolution and avoidance of artifacts arising from CSF motion, respiratory motion, and swallowing, which place additional demands on imaging. The of this project is to optimize and apply these MR techniques on studying the human spinal cord for providing non-invasively structural, physiological and functional in vivo information focusing primarily in the evaluation of patients with spinal cord injury. All methodological activities in this project represent significant departures from routine practice in the imaging of the spine. | ||||||
