Title / Titel Phantom sensations after deafferentation/deefferentation and their simulation in healthy subjects: visual-sensimotor interactions
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung Phantom limb sensations are a very intruiging problem in neurology, associated with major repercussions on the life of the patients, espe-cially when associated with phantom limb pain following amputations or spinal cord injury. Recently, the data from the literature are pro-gressing rapidly with the contribution of functional MRI studies, a spe-cial focus on the reorganization of the primary sensory and motor cor-tex have led to a rapid increase in our knowledge in this area. The novelty of this project is the exploration of a new hypothesis, based on premotor-parietal networks activation by the visual observation, in the development of persistence of phantom sensations.
The studies in healthy subjects, where phantom sensations are ex-perimentally evoked, will allow for a correlation of the short-term plas-ticity of the human cortex compared to deafferentation/deefferentation situations. The systematic study of referred sensations will also pro-vide a better understanding of the referred sensations that occur in paraplegic patinets. By a structured interview on phantom sensations new and systematic classifications of the phantom sensations will be accesible for further research in the field.
