Completed research project

Title / Titel Rehabilitation Technology Matrix
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung The vision of this project is to develop and apply new technologies for the rehabilitation of patients with neurological disorders as well as to better understand the underlying physiological and behavioral processes that mediate effective rehabilitation. To successfully solve these highly interdisciplinary tasks, this research matrix is characterized by a close collaboration among biological, clinical, engineering, and computer science groups. Novel human-centered robotic strategies are being derived for training of upper and lower limb function that assist stroke and SCI patients only as much as needed. Vegetative state patients are exposed to audiovisual stimuli and body movements, while monitoring the patients' central, peripheral and vegetative reactions, with the goal of accelerating the process of re-awakening. A further project deals with the application of functional electrical stimulation (FES) on paralyzed limbs. Novel wearable systems are being designed to make the systems easy to use and acceptable for daily application. Furthermore, Virtual Reality technologies are being developed that allow patients to explore different virtual environments and perform virtual training tasks and, thus, increases motivation and acceptance. Multi-sensory motion, voice and physiological signals are recorded and processed to infer the intention and overall psycho-physiological state of the patient. Finally, the new technologies of these matrix activities shall be transferred to the clinical sites and the industry.
